Shopify's AI Agents Can Now Click "Place Order." Here's Why That Includes Buy Button Plus Users.

Shopify's AI agents can now complete checkout, not just browse your catalog. Here's why that includes Buy Button Plus merchants on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace and more.

Our October 9th post told you your Shopify backend already qualifies your catalog for ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini. On September 28, Shopify went a step further: AI agents can now complete the checkout itself, not just find your listing. If you’re running Buy Button Plus on WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, or Lovable, that extends to you too — because the checkout a Buy Button Plus sale finishes on is the same checkout this runs inside.

“Being listed” and “being purchasable” just became two different things

Last week’s post was about discovery: Shopify Catalog feeds your products into ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, so an agent can find and recommend what you sell. That’s catalog-level eligibility, and it says nothing about whether an agent can actually buy it.

On September 28, 2026, Shopify shipped a separate capability at the checkout level. Browser-based AI agents can now call three tools directly against an active checkout: get_checkout to read its state, update_checkout to change fields like shipping or payment details, and complete_checkout to submit the order once the buyer confirms (Shopify developer changelog). Shopify’s own changelog is specific about where these tools run: “inside checkout-web,” using “the same state as the checkout UI,” with no new API and no merchant configuration required.

That’s a different, bigger claim than last week’s. Being discoverable to an agent and being transactable by one are two separate capabilities that shipped two weeks apart — and the second one is the one that actually closes a sale.

Why this isn’t limited to Shopify-theme checkouts

It would be reasonable to assume “runs inside checkout-web” means Shopify-theme-only, the same assumption we corrected about catalog eligibility last week. It doesn’t hold up here either, and the changelog itself hints at why: the original WebMCP tools for storefront and cart browsing, which shipped in August, were explicitly scoped to Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts — Shopify named the restriction right in the URL.

The September 28 checkout tools carry no such scoping. They operate on checkout-web itself, which is the single hosted checkout Shopify uses across every sales channel — Online Store, the free Buy Button, and Buy Button Plus included. A storefront built on Liquid and a storefront built on WordPress both hand the buyer off to the same checkout-web page at the same point in the funnel.

Why your Buy Button Plus checkout is already in scope

A Buy Button Plus sale’s checkout step has always been checkout-web, not a page hosted on your own site. An agent transacting there sees the same get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout tools regardless of which storefront sent the buyer to that checkout in the first place. You didn’t need a new integration or a theme update for this to apply to you, because the capability was added to the checkout, and your checkout was already that checkout.

Where to actually watch for this traffic — it isn’t your button analytics

Buy Button Plus’s button-level analytics measures clicks and conversions on your embedded buttons — genuinely useful for comparing which button, page, or product converts best. It wasn’t built to separate agent-driven sessions from human ones, and a buyer whose agent completes checkout through these new tools without touching your embedded button again won’t show up there as its own category.

Shopify’s own admin is where that visibility actually lives. Per Shopify’s Help Center, orders placed through AI channels “display in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution, so that you know where the order originated from” (Shopify Help Center), managed under Sales channels > Agentic in Shopify Admin (Shopify Help Center). That’s the native place to check for agent-attributed orders — a Shopify report, not a Buy Button Plus one.

Last week, the news was that you’re already listed. This week, it turns out being listed and being purchasable were never the same thing — and the second one just extended to you too, not because Buy Button Plus shipped anything new, but because your checkout was always Shopify’s checkout.

Check Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify Admin before assuming that traffic isn't there.

Frequently asked questions

Does this require any setup in Buy Button Plus or Shopify Admin?
No. Shopify’s own changelog states the checkout tools “don’t expose a new API or require merchant configuration.”
Is this the same as the Agentic Storefronts catalog eligibility covered last week?
No. That was catalog-level — being discoverable inside ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini. This is checkout-level — an agent actually completing a purchase, a separate capability that shipped two weeks later, on September 28.
Can I see which orders came from an AI agent?
Not in Buy Button Plus’s button-level analytics, which only tracks activity on your embedded button. Check Sales channels > Agentic in Shopify Admin instead — Shopify attributes AI-channel orders there with channel and referrer information.
Can an agent complete a purchase without the buyer's knowledge?
No. Shopify’s tools hand control back to the buyer whenever their input is required, such as 3D Secure authentication, and the complete_checkout tool submits the order only after buyer confirmation.
