Selling on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode: The Setup Guide for Wix, Squarespace and WordPress Sellers

You don't need a Shopify theme to sell on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Copilot and Meta. Here's the setup, whether or not you're on Shopify yet.

No, you don’t need a Shopify theme to sell your products on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot or Meta. You need your product catalog inside Shopify. Your Wix, Squarespace or WordPress site doesn’t have to change at all. Here’s the setup, whether you’re already running on Shopify or not.

We’ve made the case before that Shopify is the best commerce backend precisely because it works behind any front end: your own site, a Shopify theme, or an AI assistant. This post covers the steps to get your products into the AI surfaces themselves.

Do you need a Shopify theme to sell on ChatGPT or Google AI Mode?

No. Shopify’s feature for this is called Agentic Storefronts, and it plugs into your Shopify product catalog, not your storefront theme (Shopify). You can run a fully custom site on Wix, Squarespace, WordPress or Webflow, and as long as your products live inside Shopify, they’re eligible for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Meta’s shopping surfaces.

The backend gates you out, not the theme. All four of those channels read from Shopify Catalog (Shopify). If your products live natively in WooCommerce, Squarespace’s own store, or Wix’s own store, with nothing in Shopify, there’s no route into any of them. Your fallback is Google’s free product listings through Merchant Center, which is a separate, older feature. It gets you into plain Google Shopping results, not ChatGPT, Copilot or Meta (Google).

Why this is worth setting up now

Shopify’s CFO, Jeff Hoffmeister, told investors at a Goldman Sachs conference on September 10, 2026 that shoppers arriving from an AI assistant are about 2.5 times more likely to land right on a product page, and that Shopify has seen roughly an 80% lift in conversion from that traffic (PYMNTS).

If you’re not on Shopify yet

Shopify has a plan built specifically for this. The Agentic plan has no monthly subscription fee (Shopify). It launched in April 2026 for merchants on WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce or a custom stack who want into Shopify Catalog without migrating anything (Nova Analytics). You sync your products to Shopify, keep your existing site exactly as it is, and become eligible for ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Meta.

The catch: the Agentic plan doesn’t include a working online store checkout (Shopify). It only gets your catalog into the AI channels. A Buy Button needs a live checkout behind it, and this plan doesn’t have one, so it can’t also power a button on your own site.

So the setup depends on what you want:

  • Only want AI-channel sales, nothing else from Shopify: sign up for the free Agentic plan, import your catalog, and turn on Agentic Storefronts. There’s no cost until an AI-channel order actually completes.
  • Also want your own Wix, Squarespace or WordPress site to sell directly: you need a paid Shopify plan with checkout enabled (Basic starts at $29/month, Shopify), plus a Buy Button app to put that checkout on your own site. That plan comes with the same Agentic Storefronts access as any other Shopify store.

If you already sell through Shopify

If your products are already in Shopify, most of this is a setting, not a project. Here’s what’s live as of this post:

Google AI Mode’s native checkout skips a few product types entirely: subscriptions, bundles, customizable products, and B2B-only listings don’t qualify, and orders needing local delivery or in-store pickup fall back to your regular storefront instead (Shopify).

Where does the customer check out? For ChatGPT and Copilot, the order redirects to your store’s normal Shopify checkout. For Google AI Mode, eligible orders complete inside Google itself, with no redirect at all.

Where Buy Button Plus fits

If you’re already selling through Shopify’s own checkout, Buy Button Plus covers what the AI channels above don’t: subscriptions, product bundles, your own branding on the buy button and cart, a Saved Cart that follows shoppers across your site, and button-level analytics showing which page actually drove the sale. None of that is available through ChatGPT, Copilot or Google’s native checkout today.

If you’re moving your backend to Shopify for the first time, Buy Button Plus is the second half of the move. The free Agentic plan gets you into the AI channels. A paid Shopify plan plus Buy Button Plus turns that same catalog into working buttons on your existing Wix, Squarespace or WordPress site. You don’t rebuild the site or touch the theme; you add an embed code where your product listings already are.

What to do this week

If you’re not on Shopify yet:

  1. Decide whether you want AI-channel sales only, or your own site selling too.
  2. Sign up for the matching plan: free Agentic plan, or a paid plan starting at Basic.
  3. Import your product catalog into Shopify.
  4. If you picked a paid plan, connect Buy Button Plus and embed your first button.

If you’re already on Shopify:

  1. Confirm your products qualify for Shopify Catalog.
  2. Complete your store policies if you haven’t.
  3. Check that Agentic Storefronts is switched on in your admin.
  4. Place one real order through ChatGPT or Copilot and watch where it lands and how it’s attributed in your admin.

Neither list asks you to rebuild your Wix, Squarespace or WordPress site. Once your catalog lives in Shopify, ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Meta are front ends reading from it, and your own site can be one more. The AI channels handle the quick one-off order. Buy Button Plus makes your site the place for what they can’t sell yet: subscriptions, bundles, and a cart that remembers the shopper.
