Shopify Just Proved You Never Needed a Shopify Theme
Shopify sells your catalog inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot with no theme involved. Why that's good news if you sell from WordPress, Squarespace or Wix.
Shopify sells merchants’ products inside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta’s AI surfaces, and none of those sales touch a Shopify theme. The products come from your Shopify catalog, checkout runs on Shopify, and the orders land in your Shopify admin. Shopify’s own Agentic plan page puts it in five words: “no Shopify online store required.”
If you sell from a WordPress, Squarespace, Wix or Webflow site with Shopify handling checkout behind it, you’ve been selling this way for years. The theme was always optional. The backend is the part Shopify does best, and AI chats are the latest proof.
What is Shopify selling inside AI chats?
Shopify calls the feature Agentic Storefronts. It introduced them on December 10, 2025 in its Winter ‘26 Edition. On March 24, 2026, it made products discoverable by default across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app, “with no separate integrations, no apps, and no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates.”
Here’s how each channel handles the purchase, according to Shopify’s Help Center:
| Channel | Where checkout happens | Default and limits |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Your Shopify checkout, opened in ChatGPT’s in-app browser or a new tab | Products discoverable by default for eligible stores |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Shopify-powered checkout inside the chat | On by default for eligible US stores |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify-powered checkout inside the chat | On by default for eligible stores, US shoppers only, no fees beyond payment processing |
| Meta surfaces such as Muse | Shopify-powered checkout inside the chat, when direct checkout is on | Managed in the same Agentic settings |
Every AI order shows up in your Shopify admin “with channel or referrer attribution,” and you pick which channels sell your products under Sales channels > Agentic.
Why does this prove you don’t need a Shopify theme?
Follow a shopper who buys in Gemini. They see a product card built from your Shopify catalog, pay through a Shopify checkout and get an order confirmation from your store. They never load a Shopify theme. Shopify built its newest sales channels on the backend alone: products, inventory, pricing, checkout and orders.
A merchant selling from a Squarespace site with Shopify-powered buttons runs the same setup. The front end is wherever the shopper happens to be, and Shopify sits behind every one of them with one product list, one stock count and one order history.
The Agentic plan pushes the idea further. It lets brands sell in AI chats with “no Shopify online store required,” no monthly fee and card rates from 2.9% + 30¢. It’s aimed at brands that don’t sell on Shopify today, but it shows that Shopify treats its backend as the product and the theme as optional.
Salesforce predicts that AI agents, from shopping assistants to price-comparison bots, will drive 20% of 2026 holiday ecommerce traffic. The shopping assistants read from the Shopify catalog, and eligible products show up there whether your website runs on a Shopify theme or on WordPress.
What can’t AI chat checkout do yet?
In-chat checkout works best for simple, one-off purchases. Shopify lists these as unsupported in Google’s and Copilot’s direct checkout:
- Subscriptions
- Product bundles
- Customizable products
- B2B-only products
Google Analytics and custom pixels don’t fire inside those checkouts either, so your usual tracking won’t record those sales. The orders still reach your Shopify admin, tagged by channel.
That gives each front end its own job:
| Job | Best front end |
|---|---|
| Getting recommended when someone asks an AI what to buy | AI chats |
| Quick purchase of a simple product | AI chats or your own site |
| Subscriptions and bundles | Your own site |
| Brand story, email signups and repeat customers | Your own site |
Where does your own website fit?
Your website handles everything AI checkout can’t: subscriptions, bundles, your story and the customers who come back. To do that job, it has to work as a full Shopify storefront, with a cart and checkout, instead of a page that links shoppers somewhere else.
Buy Button Plus turns your site into that storefront. You pick products or collections in Shopify, style a button to match your site, and paste one embed into WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Webflow or any page that accepts HTML. Shoppers get digital and physical subscriptions, every Shopify discount type, and a saved cart that follows them across your site and between visits. Price, photo and stock changes in Shopify update every button automatically, and orders land in the same Shopify admin as your AI-channel orders.

Can AI agents shop on a site that isn’t a Shopify theme?
Two different things get called “AI shopping.”
- Agentic Storefronts sell from your Shopify catalog inside the AI app. Your website’s platform doesn’t matter, because the AI never visits it.
- WebMCP lets an AI agent work through a website in the shopper’s own browser. Shopify has switched it on for Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts only, which we covered in our post on AI shopping agents and WebMCP.
Agentic Storefronts are the part every Shopify merchant can use today, including merchants who sell from their own site.
What should you check in your Shopify admin?
- Open Sales channels > Agentic. See which AI channels are on and whether in-chat checkout is active for Google and Copilot.
- Clean up your product data. Write titles that describe the product, fill in every variant name and give each item a real description. That data now feeds your website’s buttons and every AI channel at once.
- Sell subscriptions and bundles on your own site. AI chat checkout can’t handle them, so make sure your site can. If you’re on WordPress, here’s how to sell Shopify products on your WordPress site without rebuilding anything.
- Compare where sales come from. AI orders are tagged by channel in your Shopify admin. On your site, Buy Button Plus’s button-level analytics show which buttons drive sales.
Your Shopify catalog now feeds your website and four AI platforms at once. Spend twenty minutes on the first two steps this week, then make sure your own site can sell everything the AI chats can’t.
