Shopify Built Its Own Free WordPress Plugin. Here's What 1.7 Stars Is Telling You.

Shopify's free Sell on WordPress app has a 1.7-star rating from its four reviews. Here's what each one says, and what to check before you build on it.

Shopify’s own free “Sell on WordPress” app has a 1.7-star rating on the Shopify App Store, built from its only four reviews. Three of them describe the plugin breaking, garbling content, or locking out the page builder the merchant was already using (Shopify App Store).

What is Shopify’s free WordPress plugin?

Shopify launched “Sell on WordPress” in September 2025 as a free, Shopify-built app that syncs products from your Shopify admin into WordPress and routes checkout back through Shopify, no WooCommerce required (Shopify App Store). If you’re running WordPress and weighing it against Buy Button Plus, the pitch sounds identical: keep your site, let Shopify handle products, inventory and checkout underneath it.

The difference shows up once you actually install it.

What do the reviews actually say?

Four reviews, all 1 or 2 stars, each describing a different way the plugin failed a specific store:

ReviewerDateWhat happened
Changing Habits (Australia)Oct 15, 2025A Shopify Plus merchant’s build broke after a week, tied to a confirmed Shopify-side bug
Hope and Play Shop (UK)Oct 30, 2025Default install works, but any styling change requires PHP development
GMI – Guitar and Music Institute (UK)Feb 2, 2026Product images came through oversized and descriptions imported garbled
nevolino.ch (Switzerland)Dec 16, 2025No Elementor compatibility, so the merchant switched to Shopify’s own free Buy Button instead

(Full text: Shopify App Store reviews.)

No new review or app update has landed since that December entry.

Why this matters going into the holiday stretch

A broken build or garbled product page is an inconvenience in June. In the six weeks before your holiday sales push, it’s lost sales you don’t get back. The Changing Habits review describes exactly that: a Shopify Plus merchant mid-build, broken by a bug on Shopify’s own side, with real money already committed to the project.

Buy Button Plus runs the same model, your site in front, Shopify’s checkout behind it, without the issues these four reviewers hit. Start your free 30-day trial and see your products live before you need them to perform.

Is Shopify’s free plugin ever the right call?

For a WordPress site with one or two simple products and no page builder to protect, “Sell on WordPress” can be enough. It’s free, and the core idea, syncing a Shopify catalog into WordPress, works as advertised for that case.

It stops being enough at the exact points these reviews flag:

  • Elementor or another builder. The nevolino.ch review reports no Elementor compatibility at all. Buy Button Plus is a copy-paste embed that drops into any page builder, Elementor included.
  • Any visual customization. Hope and Play Shop needed PHP just to change how it looked. Buy Button Plus buttons and cart are styled through the app’s own settings, no code; the Pro plan adds full custom CSS for stores that want pixel-level control.
  • Subscriptions, discounts, Saved Cart. None of these exist in the free plugin. Buy Button Plus supports digital and physical subscriptions, all of Shopify’s discount types, and a Saved Cart that follows shoppers across the site.

Shopify building this plugin proves the model works: your WordPress site in front, Shopify’s checkout behind it. The reviews show where it breaks: inside WordPress, where a sync plugin has to fight your theme, your page builder and your PHP. Buy Button Plus skips that fight because it’s a single embed. It drops into Elementor or any builder, takes its styling from the app, and picks up price and inventory changes from Shopify automatically. Same model, without the breakage, six weeks before it has to perform.
